AI Has Already Decided Which Care Homes Families Will Use. Yours Probably Isn't One of Them

The Old Way of Searching Still Works, But Not for Long

For years, finding a care home has meant one thing: type "care homes in [town]" into Google, get a big long list back, and go off and do all the hard work yourself.

Search "care homes in Doncaster" today and that's still exactly what happens. A map pops up with three homes on it. Sandalwood Court at 4.2 stars. Oaklands at 4.8. Cedars at 5.0. Underneath that, a few paid ads from the big directory sites. Then page after page of everything else.

It's basically a phone book. Everyone gets their name in it, and the poor family looking for a place for Mum or Dad has to wade through the whole lot themselves.

Here's the thing though. Increasingly, families don't search like that anymore.

What Happens When You Ask AI Instead

So I tried something different. Instead of typing "care homes in Doncaster" into Google, I described a real person to AI, just like you would to a friend.

She's 92. A bit forgetful. Needs help getting dressed in the morning. Apart from that, fit as a fiddle. I asked AI to find her a care home in Doncaster.

No list. No scrolling. AI made a decision straight away: she needs residential care, not nursing care. Then it gave me three names. Benton House, 4.6 stars, described as warm and welcoming. The Laurels, 5.0 stars, praised for treating people with dignity. Amphion View, 3.7 stars, central, calm daily routine.

Three names. Not thirty. Each one chosen because it actually matched her situation.

If You're Not in the Top Three, You Don't Exist

Right, this is the bit every care home owner needs to sit up and pay attention to.

When someone describes their real situation to AI, they're not handed a list to browse at their leisure. They get an answer. Usually just three names.

And if your care home isn't one of those three names, the family never even knows you exist. There's no scrolling past you to find more choices further down the page. There is no further down the page. That's it. Game over.

Distance Matters Less Than You Think

Now here's the part that genuinely surprised me.

The AI (in this case, Google Gemini) recommended a care home several miles outside Doncaster town centre, ahead of homes sat right in the middle of town.

Think about that for a second. For years, being close to the town centre gave you a head start. If you were stuck out in a rural spot, you were already playing catch up before you'd even started.

AI doesn't care about any of that. It reads what's actually written about your home: your website, your Google profile, your reviews, how clearly you explain who you look after. Get that right, and AI will happily send business your way even if you're miles out in the countryside. Being rural isn't the handicap it used to be. Having a rubbish website is.

This Is Happening to Every Local Business, Not Just Care Homes

And it's not just us in the care industry feeling this. It's happening everywhere.

Take electricians, for example. When we asked AI to find the best electrician in a city with over 90 to choose from. AI came back with five names. Just five.

One electrician who didn't make the cut had 25 years' experience and a 4.7 star rating. A genuinely good tradesman by any measure. But his problem wasn't his work, it was that AI simply didn't have enough recent information about him online to feel confident putting his name forward.

Every single business that did make the list had the same things going for them: recent reviews, replies to those reviews, up to date photos, a complete profile.

Care homes are no different. AI isn't recommending whoever gives the best care. It's recommending whoever it knows the most about. Remember that.

Know Exactly Who You're Trying to Attract

Families have stopped typing "care home near me." They're describing the actual person who needs help, warts and all.

The age. Whether there's dementia, and how far along. Whether they need nursing care or just a hand with daily tasks. What matters most to the family making the decision.

AI takes all of that and goes looking for the closest match. So job number one is getting crystal clear on exactly who your care home is for. What type of resident are you trying to attract?

"Older people who need care" won't cut it. Say what you actually mean.

Run a dementia care home? What stage can you support? Mild, where people are still mostly getting on with life themselves? Or more advanced, where they need a lot more hands-on help? Can you take on nursing care as well, or are you strictly residential? Can you cope with residents who get unsettled or disruptive, or is your home built around a calm, quiet routine?

Say It Clearly on Your Website

Once you know exactly who your ideal resident is, get your website saying it, loud and clear.

Describe what daily life actually looks like in your home. Spell out exactly what kind of care you provide, and why someone in that exact situation should pick you over anyone else.

And cover the things every family wants to know: fees, funding options, whether you offer trial stays, how visits work.

Keep Your Reviews and Profile Up to Date

It's not just your website AI is reading. It's your Google Business Profile too.

Your star rating. How recent your reviews are. Whether you bother replying to them. Whether your photos are current or from five years ago.

A vague website propped up by a handful of old reviews gives AI almost nothing to work with. And when AI doesn't have enough to go on, it won't take the risk of recommending you. Simple as that.
